The African Union Commission (AUC) has voiced significant apprehension regarding the implications of the new travel restrictions recently enacted by the United States government, which directly impact several African nations. The updated ban, signed by President Donald Trump earlier this week, imposes a near-total prohibition on travel to the U.S. for nationals from 12 countries, including six on the African continent: Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia. The expanded list also includes Afghanistan, Myanmar, Haiti, Iran, Sudan, and Yemen.

Furthermore, a partial ban has been levied against travelers from an additional seven nations, comprising Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, with only specific visa categories, such as those for temporary work, being permissible.

While acknowledging the "sovereign right of all nations to protect their borders and ensure the security of their citizens," the AU stated that such measures should be implemented in a way that is "balanced, evidence-based, and reflective of the long-standing partnership between the United States and Africa." The Commission underscored its worry about the "potential negative impact of such measures on people-to-people ties, educational exchange, commercial engagement, and the broader diplomatic relations that have been carefully nurtured over decades," emphasizing the mutual interests shared by Africa and the United States in fostering peace, prosperity, and global cooperation.

In light of these concerns, the African Union Commission respectfully urged the U.S. Administration to consider a "more consultative approach" and engage in "constructive dialogue with the countries concerned." The Commission also called for transparent communication and, where necessary, collaborative efforts to address any underlying issues that may have prompted this decision. Reaffirming its commitment, the AUC expressed its readiness to support initiatives that foster understanding, resolve concerns, and bolster cooperation between Africa and the United States.
