The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has issued a public apology following a delay in the administration of the English Language Paper 2 for the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), which occurred on Wednesday evening, May 28. As reported by Vanguard on Thursday, May 29, the council expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to students, parents, and school administrators due to the disruption.
In a statement signed by Moyosola Adesina, Acting Head of the Council’s Public Affairs Department, WAEC clarified that the primary reason for the delay stemmed from enhanced efforts to safeguard the security and confidentiality of examination materials. The council emphasized its unwavering commitment to preventing exam paper leaks, which necessitated additional precautions that ultimately impacted the timely distribution of the English Language paper across various examination centers.
The statement acknowledged that while the objective of maintaining exam integrity was achieved, the unintended consequence was a disruption to the smooth and timely conduct of the test. WAEC attributed these challenges to a combination of logistical issues, safety concerns, and local environmental factors that complicated operations on the day of the examination.
Despite these setbacks, the examination body reassured all stakeholders of its dedication to upholding high standards and ensuring a fair assessment process for all candidates. WAEC also pledged to thoroughly review its operational framework to prevent similar disruptions in future examinations. The council extended its understanding for the anxiety the delay may have caused candidates and their families, reiterating its deep regret for the inconvenience and assuring that its team is actively working to improve internal processes and reinforce operational readiness for the remaining papers.
The apology concluded with WAEC reaffirming its commitment to promoting educational excellence and ensuring that its examinations continue to be conducted with transparency, fairness, and credibility.
