The Kano State Government has initiated the long-awaited disbursement of over N16 billion in outstanding gratuities and various allowances to former local government officials, including councillors who served during the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration from 2014 to 2024. Governor Kabir Yusuf officially launched this significant payment exercise on Wednesday in Kano, emphasizing it as a crucial step towards upholding justice and fairness for public servants at the grassroots.

Governor Yusuf underscored that these payments are not a mere favor but rather the rightful entitlements of individuals who dedicated themselves to diligent service to the state, reflecting his administration's unwavering commitment to principles of fairness, justice, and accountability in governance. The comprehensive disbursement, which encompasses accommodation, leave, housing, and furniture allowances, received approval from the State Executive Council, addressing years of neglect under the previous government.

The Governor highlighted that these former officials had been unjustly denied their benefits for nearly a decade, asserting that his administration is rectifying past injustices to ensure that no one who served Kano State is overlooked. The N16 billion payment plan will unfold in three distinct phases: Tranche A, covering 2014–2017, will see 903 beneficiaries immediately receive N1.8 billion. Tranche B, for the 2018–2020 period, will involve 1,198 beneficiaries being paid N5.6 billion between May and July 2025. Finally, Tranche C, encompassing 2021–2024, will disburse N8.2 billion to 1,371 beneficiaries between August and November 2025.

Beyond these arrears, the state has also allocated N1.27 billion for housing and furniture allowances for current elected and appointed local government officials, with this disbursement already underway across all 44 local government councils. Governor Yusuf extended his commendation to the dedicated verification teams, finance officers, oversight committees, and administrative coordinators, acknowledging their diligent efforts in ensuring the transparency and credibility of this extensive payment process.
