NELFUND Catch 51 Universities and Others wey dey Do illegal Deductions on Each Students Loan

NELFUND Catch 51 Universities and Others wey dey Do illegal Deductions on Each Students Loan

Big trouble dey brew as dem catch about 51 universities red-handed say dem dey do "under the table" with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) money. Tori wey reach The Guardian newspaper say these universities dey cut corner, dey collect anywhere from N3,500 to a whopping N30,000 extra from the school fees wey NELFUND pay for each student.

NELFUND and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) vex well well about this, callin' these schools "ole" for collecting money from the government for school fees but no dey give the students back the full amount when the money land for the school account. Dem still accuse these schools say dem no dey transparent at all, say dem hide the record of how dem share the money.

The long list of universities wey dey inside this dirty game include big names like Modibbo Adama University, Yola; Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech); Lagos State University of Education (LASUED); Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH); Niger Delta University; University of Port Harcourt; Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi; Kaduna State University and Federal University, Dutsinma.

The list no stop there o! Ebonyi State University; Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN); Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO); Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo, Benue State; Abia State University; Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA); Federal University Lokoja (FUL); University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID); Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and even Kano State University dey inside.

Others wey their hand dey inside the cookie jar na University of Calabar; Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE); Bayero University, Kano (BUK); University of Ilorin (UNILORIN); University of Abuja (UniAbuja); Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife; and Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State.

Students wey be victim for this "chop chop" don dey cry out their pain to The Guardian. Some say their schools just add different different fees without any clear explanation. Others say even after NELFUND don pay their school fees, the schools still no gree refund the money wey dem don pay before.

For example, University of Jos (UNIJOS) collect between N145,000 and N150,000 per student from NELFUND, instead of the N130,000 wey dem approve as school fees. This mean say dem get extra N10,000 to N20,000 per student. Federal University, Lafia show students N148,500 for their NELFUND dashboard, even though their school fee na N120,000 – that's a whole N28,000 difference! Na the same story for ATBU, wey dey charge N135,000 instead of N110,000, and BUK, wey dey charge N141,500 instead of N130,000. OAU dey collect N125,000 instead of N105,000, Niger Delta University dey add N30,000 extra, Abia State University dey make extra N7,500, and FUOYE, UniAbuja, UNILORIN, OOU, and UNN all dey do their own small small "magomago" with the loan money.

Students wey don pay their fees before NELFUND pay out the loan dey face serious wahala to collect their refund. One student from Taraba State University say the school only give him back N57,000 from the N120,000 wey he pay. University of Calabar dey even demand N12,000 just to generate a refund invoice!

Students from other schools like ABU, FUTO, Rivers State University, LAUTECH, and UNILORIN also share bitter experiences of how their schools dey delay or even refuse to refund their money. One parent talk how FUTA force students to pay part of their fees before dem go fit register, even after NELFUND don pay. Three months later, dem still never see their refund.

FUTA and Modibbo Adama University don finally admit say this thing dey happen and promise to pay back the affected students. But big schools like ABU, UNN, and LASUED still dey keep mum, dem no talk anything.

NELFUND dey seriously angry with how these schools dey drag their feet on refunding the students, especially after dem don disburse over N50 billion to about 300 tertiary institutions. NELFUND say some schools dey collect the loan money direct into their accounts but dem no dey tell the students and still dey ask them to pay school fees. The NELFUND Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyer, don issue serious threat say dem go carry any school wey continue this bad behavior go court.

Plenty people dey suggest say NELFUND suppose to dey pay the loan money directly to the students instead of giving it to the schools. Dem say this go stop the schools from mismanaging the funds, reduce unnecessary delays, and make sure students get their money on time.

Findings show say NELFUND don already give out over N50 billion to about 300 public tertiary institutions. The agency itself don raise alarm say some schools no dey tell their students when dem receive loan money on their behalf, and dem still dey ask the same students to pay school fees. NELFUND warn say this kind of behavior dey unethical and against the whole reason why dem create the loan scheme.

NOA also talk say dem don discover plenty dirty practices by some schools. Dem don even tell their state offices to gather more information from students so that the federal government go take proper action against the schools wey dey do wrong. NOA say some schools dey deliberately delay payments for their own personal gain, in connivance with some banks. Dem even say some universities no dey even acknowledge say NELFUND don pay money for their students.

One activist, Omole Ibukun, dey very worried say this loan scheme don turn to "corruption venture" just under one year after dem start am. He say the loan don even make life harder for students and confuse those wey qualify for the loan. He dey urge the government to introduce free education, make school governance more democratic, and create student oversight committees to monitor how schools dey spend money. He call this whole thing "betrayal of trust" and say the only real solution na to reduce school fees drastically or make education free. He warn say hiding this kind of information go make many students drop out of school.

Ibukun dey advise the affected students to sue the schools and say NELFUND need to do better by creating student committees wey go get access to all financial records of the schools. He insist say all the schools wey dey guilty must refund the double payments.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Olushola Oladoja, say dem don launch full investigation into this matter and dem go meet with NELFUND and other relevant agencies to find out the truth.
