My people, here to this serious matter wey dey happen for Rivers State! One young boy, Godwin Akpakpan, wey be 300-level student for University of Port Harcourt, dem say police shoot am die, and now the family dey shout for justice because dem believe say police dey try to cover up the whole thing.
This Godwin, according to his family, he disappear since April 16th. Dem say he dey come back from watching Arsenal match last Wednesday when he go missing. The family dey grieve, say Godwin na gentle person, full of life, and he be the third born out of seven children.
The next day, which be Thursday, 17th of April 2025, Godwin aunty and some of his friends from school call his phone. Na one police officer answer the call, and he tell them make dem come State CID, for the Homicide Department. When the family reach there, the police officer read one cold statement say na army people for inside one small bus shoot Godwin die. The police no even give them any paper or official letter to carry go identify his body for mortuary. This one just confuse and pain the family more.
The police story be say Godwin dey inside one mini-bus dey go house when one police patrol team from Dragon Division (wey dem know as SARS Road PH) stop and search the bus. Dem claim say dem find hard drugs, arrest everybody inside, and as dem dey carry them go station, dem meet army checkpoint for front of one hotel. The police further talk say one "soldier" open fire to try rescue the people wey dem arrest from the police. Dem say the bullet mistakenly pass through the mini-bus and kill Godwin.
But the family say their mind no dey rest at all with this story. Dem say police tell them to come back the next Wednesday, but when dem reach, dem wait till 3:20pm before the officer even show face. And when he finally come, he tell them to come back again the next day, which be Thursday, 24th of April. This one frustrate the family no be small.
When dem come back on Thursday, the same police officer read the same statement again. Then dem carry them go show them the mini-bus. After that, the family insist say dem must see Godwin body. So, dem go UPTH mortuary, and na Anti-Cultism Dragon Base Division carry the body go there. When dem see the body, the family say e dey in a terrible state, sand full everywhere. Dem see two gunshot wounds for his stomach, bruise for both his hands and forehead, and injury for his back. The pain dey heavy for their voice as dem narrate this.
After seeing Godwin disfigured body, the family go Anti-Cultism Dragon Division. When dem reach there, the IPO go inside hold one secret meeting with some other officers before he come back with three of them. The family challenge the police story, say the police even discourage them from doing proper investigation for where the incident happen. One of the police officers suggest say make small team go the place. But when dem reach there, the address no be the same as the one wey dey for the statement, and the police officer warn them say make dem no come out of the car because the soldiers "useless" and fit shoot them if dem try investigate. One family member say he no listen and he try to check around, and the IPO vex and refuse to continue the investigation.
Now, the family dey very sure say na police, no be army, kill their son, Godwin. Dem say army people no dey usually stay for that particular location. Dem believe say na police pattern, say this no be the first time dem dey do this kind thing, and e no go be the last.
Family members tell SaharaReporters say the incident happen along East-West Road, near Alakaya, and na there Godwin dey live before he die. Dem say Godwin dey live for Alakaya, but the police statement say dem shoot him for SARS Road inside Port Harcourt. Dem dey lament say nobody don take responsibility for his death, and police no give any reason why dem shoot him.
According to the family, na one police officer wey dem identify as Inspector Festus from the Homicide Department of the State CID carry Godwin body go mortuary without them even knowing. Dem say police carry him go mortuary since when dem still dey look for him, before dem even find out say dem don kill him. The family dey feel serious grief mixed with anger.

When SaharaReporters contact Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, she ask if dem don officially report the case for any police station. After dem tell her yes and give her the details of the police unit involved, she never still give any comment as dem dey write this report. The family just dey cry out for justice for their son wey dem lose.
